Frequently Asked Questions

Getting started

What is STAT-Tag?

STAT-Tag is video analysis and data collection software that runs in your browser. You build your own tags, tag a match as you watch it, and get live stats, coordinates, clips and exports out the other side. It started with rugby and is built to work across any sport.

Do I need an account?

Yes, and it is free to make one. A free account lets you tag full matches straight away, and you can upgrade to Pro whenever you want more.

Do I need to install anything?

No, STAT-Tag runs in the browser. Installing it from your browser menu is optional, but worth it: you get a dedicated window and an icon in your dock, and the app keeps working offline, which matters on a pitch-side connection.

Why does STAT-Tag start with no tags?

On purpose. Rugby and soccer need different buttons, and so does every other sport, so instead of shipping a generic set that fits nobody, you build the tag set that matches how you already analyse your sport. Setting up a working tag set takes a few minutes.

Where do I learn the app?

The Tutorial takes you through 17 chapters covering everything from your first video to distance rules, flags, collaboration and importing from another platform, and it runs on throwaway demo data so it never touches your real work.

Can I use it on a phone or tablet?

STAT-Tag is built for desktop, where you have the room for video, tag grid and timeline side by side. Tablets work, though what you get depends on the device, and smaller or lower-powered ones will feel cramped. Phones are too small for the full workspace today.

What languages is STAT-Tag available in?

English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi and Chinese. Pick your language from the app and it stays selected. Anything not yet translated falls back to English rather than breaking.

Video

What video files can I use?

MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, M4V, TS, MTS, WMV and FLV, straight from your device. A local file gives you the most control, because frame-accurate stepping and clip export both work best with the raw file.

Can I use a YouTube or Google Drive link?

Yes. You can paste YouTube, Twitch, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, HLS (.m3u8) or any direct video URL and tag against it normally. Two features need the raw file, so multi-angle sync and clip export are not available on YouTube and Google Drive sources. If you need clips, use a downloaded file.

Can I record instead of uploading?

Yes. Capture your screen or record from a camera directly in STAT-Tag, and tag while it records. DVR mode lets you seek back to check something that just happened without stopping the recording, then jump straight back to live.

Can I use more than one camera angle?

Yes, up to four. All angles run off one clock, you can nudge each one into alignment down to a tenth of a second, and you choose which angle you hear.

Can I trim or join videos?

Yes, on Pro. Trim each source down to the part you care about, and combine multiple files into a single video so a match split across several files behaves as one. Both re-encode in your browser and leave the original untouched.

Can I move frame by frame?

Yes. STAT-Tag detects the frame rate of your video automatically and lets you step a single frame at a time, so you can put an event on the exact moment it happened rather than near it. Skip buttons cover the bigger jumps.

I have two monitors. Can I split the app?

Yes. Pop the video out into a second window and keep your stats and timeline on the main screen. Snap back returns everything to one window.

Tagging

How does tagging actually work?

Player, tag, detail. You press a player, press a tag, and pick a sub-tag if that tag has one. Change possession when it turns over and change game state at each break, and that is a full match tagged.

Can I use keyboard shortcuts?

Yes. Give any tag a single-key shortcut and the whole match can be tagged from the keyboard. Video controls have their own shortcuts, and they take priority if you assign the same key twice.

How deep can tags nest?

Up to 10 levels, which is far more than most sports need. Any tag can have sub-tags, and those can have their own sub-tags, so a Turnover can break down into how, where and by whom without cluttering the main grid.

Can tags score points?

Yes. Mark a tag as a scoring tag and give it a points value, and the live scoreboard keeps itself up to date as you tag. Toggle tags are the other special type: press once to start, press again to stop, and the clip covers the whole passage.

How do teams and players work?

Two squads with names, colours and numbers, split into starters and subs. You can import a roster from CSV, drag to reorder, and drag a starter onto a sub to make a substitution, which logs the Sub Off and Sub On events for you.

Video time or match time?

Both. Set a time anchor to pin a point in the video to a point on the match clock, and every event carries both timestamps from then on. Game states like Second Half can carry their own anchor, so the clock is right after every break.

Can I fix a mistake after tagging it?

Yes. Right-click any row in the timeline to reassign the team, player or sub-tag, and delete rows you do not want. Filters on every column help you find the rows to fix.

Can I lay the tag buttons out how I want?

Yes. Drag any button to move it, drag its edge to resize it across columns and rows, and the labels resize themselves to fit. There is an auto-layout if you would rather not fiddle, and you can save the layout and load it into your next match.

Importing existing data

Can I bring in a timeline from another platform?

Yes. STAT-Tag reads SportsCode and Nacsport XML, Opta Superscout XML and Opta BI CSV directly, and it will take any other CSV, XML or Excel file through a mapping step. Your events, tags, teams, players, coordinates and timestamps come in as native STAT-Tag data you can then filter, flag, clip and export like anything you tagged yourself.

Existing work does not have to be redone to move across, and a season already coded elsewhere is still usable.

Do I have to convert my Excel file first?

No. Drop the .xlsx straight in and STAT-Tag reads the sheet itself. CSV and XML work the same way. Files that look like spreadsheets but are not, such as Numbers documents or an XML file Excel has wrapped, are recognised and told apart so you know what to do about it.

How much of the mapping do I have to do?

STAT-Tag inspects your columns and proposes a mapping, telling you how confident it is in each guess and why. You confirm or change it in a preview showing the real rows, assign the teams, and adjust in bulk before anything is committed. Time can be read as seconds, mm:ss, hh:mm:ss or frame counts.

What happens to coordinates and substitutions on import?

Providers usually record coordinates relative to the team in possession, so both teams attack the same way in the raw data. STAT-Tag detects that and rotates one side onto a shared pitch, showing you the result so you can flip it if it guessed wrong. Substitutions become linked Sub Off and Sub On pairs, exactly like ones you made yourself.

Is importing a Pro feature?

Yes. Importing from another platform is Pro, as are all the other imports and exports.

Analysis

What do I get out of a tagged match?

Live stats that update as you tag, a full timeline of every event, and possession splits from the possession toggle alone. Drill into any tag for its sub-tag breakdown, and double-click a stat row to watch every clip behind that number.

How do coordinates work?

Pick your field template, from soccer, rugby union and league, GAA, American football, basketball, baseball, ice hockey, field hockey and tennis, or upload your own pitch image. Switch to Tag + Coords mode and tick Allow Coordinate Tracking on the tags you want positions for, then click the pitch after each tag. You can also come back later and add coordinates to already-tagged events in Coords-Only mode.

What are flags?

Rules that highlight events automatically. A rule can test whether an event has a tag or is missing one, whether another tag came before or after it, whether a tag appeared a minimum number of times inside a time window, or whether the event sits between two other tags.

Every condition can be scoped to anyone, to the same team, or to the same player, and you can combine conditions with all-of or any-of logic and a time window. So "this tag occurred after tag A but before tag B, by the same player, within 20 seconds" is one rule. Coaches use flags to surface patterns; analysts use them to catch tagging errors.

Can STAT-Tag calculate distances?

Yes, from your coordinates. Set a from-tag and a to-tag and STAT-Tag pairs them up and totals the distance per player, per team and overall. Choose a straight line, ground gained forward, sideways movement, or both axes reported separately.

It understands which way each team is playing, so forward is forward for both sides and stays correct after they swap ends at half time. You can stop a chain on a given tag or when the game state changes, so a possession ends where it actually ended, and you can also build chains by hand for one-off measurements.

Kick-to-catch metres, ground gained from carry to breakdown, how far a restart travelled, how much territory a possession won: all of it comes from rules you set once, and reuse next match by exporting the rules. Distances live in the fullscreen view alongside Stats, Timeline and Flags, and export as their own CSV.

Can I filter what I am looking at?

Yes, and the filter applies everywhere at once, including your exports. Narrow by game time or video time range, by line number, by game state, team, player, how deep into the tag tree you want to go, and by which flags an event has raised. Set it once and the stats, timeline, distances and any export you run all follow it.

Can I analyse without video at all?

Yes. There is a no-video timeline mode for tagging from the stand or working through a match you only have data for. Everything else, including stats, flags and exports, behaves the same way.

Clips and exports

How do I get clips out?

Each tag carries its own lead and lag seconds, so every event is already a clip with the right amount of build-up and follow-through. Filter the timeline to what you want, select the rows, and export them as a single stitched MP4.

Where does clip export happen?

In your browser, on your machine. Nothing is uploaded to a server, which keeps your footage yours and means export speed depends on your computer rather than someone else’s queue. Clip export needs the WebCodecs video encoder, so use Chrome or Edge 94 or newer. YouTube and Google Drive sources cannot be exported, because the browser is not allowed to read their frames.

What data can I export?

Stats as CSV, one row per event with times, team, player, tag path, coordinates and notes. Calculated distances as their own CSV, per player, per team and overall. Full timeline as JSON including voice notes. Your tags, team lists, flags, distance rules, game states, panel layout and shortcuts each export on their own, and All Data exports everything in one file. Exports follow whatever filter the timeline is on.

Can I reuse my setup for the next match?

Yes, and this is the point of the separate exports. Export your tags once and import them into every match after that. The same works for team lists, flags, distance rules, game states, your button layout and your keyboard shortcuts, so a new match takes seconds to set up.

Can I record voice notes?

Yes. Record a note against any clip and it travels with your exports, so an analyst’s comment reaches the coach with the footage.

Plans and billing

Is there a free plan?

Yes, and it is a generous one. Free gives you the whole analysis workspace: unlimited events, tags and players, video upload and URL sources, screen and camera recording, multiple videos with up to four synced angles, coordinate tracking, distance calculations, flag automation, live stats, the timeline, possession, game states and voice notes. You can tag and analyse a full match end to end without paying.

Pro is about producing something you can hand on. Trimming and combining video, every export and import: stats and distances as CSV, stitched video clips, your timeline, tags, teams, flags, distance rules, game states, layouts and shortcuts, All Data in one file, importing from SportsCode, Opta or a spreadsheet, and real-time collaboration.

Is there a free trial?

Yes, 10 days of Pro with no charge until the trial ends, one per account. You will be offered it inside the app, and it is also on the plans page.

How much does Pro cost?

Weekly, monthly and yearly options, with yearly the best value. Current prices are always on the plans page. Payment is handled by Stripe and you can cancel at any time.

How do I cancel or change my plan?

Everything is self-serve on the plans page. Open the billing portal there to switch plan, update payment details or cancel in a couple of clicks, with no email to send and nothing to chase. Cancelling keeps your access until the end of the period you have already paid for.

Can multiple people work on the same game together?

Yes. Several people can tag the same match at the same time and see each other’s events appear live, which is how a coach and an analyst split a match between them. The person who starts the session sets a password, approves who joins, decides who can edit and who can only watch, and can remove anyone. Joiners either merge into what is already there or start from the host’s copy. Everyone taking part needs a subscription.

Your data and support

Where is my data stored?

On your own device, in your browser. STAT-Tag does not store your match data on our servers, which is why it is fast and works offline. It also means your data is tied to that browser on that computer, so use All Data export to back up and to move between machines.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Tag with no internet connection and everything saves locally, so a stand with no signal is not a problem. Pro features keep working offline for 48 hours, and reconnecting resets that window so STAT-Tag can check your subscription.

What if I want a feature that does not exist?

Tell us. The Future Features page lists what is being considered and lets you vote, and you can email future-features@stat-tag.net directly. Requests from users drive most of what gets built.

How do I get help?

Email support@stat-tag.net. Include what you were doing and which browser you are using, and we will get back to you.
